In a nutshell: The BUFFALO (Burnley Food and Fitness Aimed at Lowering Obesity) programme has been successfully running in Burnley for the last five years. Run by the local council and the PCT, the scheme focuses on nine and ten year olds and is mostly funded by lottery money. Children take part in cookery and activity sessions, and spend time on an allotment. The number of obese children has fallen by ten percent.

In a nutshell: This report evaluates the Walk4Life programme which was implemented by the Ramblers in association with the British Heart Foundation and the Department of Health in Barrow-in Furness, Workington and Ulverston. The project aimed to increase the physical activity levels of children, thereby reducing obesity levels. The aim of this evaluation is to explore the succesful elements of the programme, and to explore the feasibility of a wider roll-out.

Web-based Weight Loss in Primary Care

In a nutshell: During this study, patients were given access to a specially designed web-based weight loss programme, and also received counselling sessions from a health coach. Patients lost more weight than those involved in usual intervention programmes, with the greatest success amongst those who accessed the website most often.
