In a nutshell: On 23rd September 2009, the Chartered Society of Physiotherapy will be working in partnership with the British Dietetic Association to provide ‘Healthy Schools Day’ events, with a physiotherapist and a dietician attending primary schools to give advice on healthy eating and movement.

Ongoing Safety Review of Orlistat

In a nutshell: The FDA has announced it is carrying out a review of Orlistat (Alli), the obesity management drug after several reports that it caused liver injury. No direct link has been found between Orlistat and kidney injury, but the FDA urges users and healthcare professionals to report side effects using the Adverse Event Report programme. The results of the review will be announced at a later date.

Million Meals Campaign

In a nutshell:  The government has launched a campaign which addresses the issues of increasing childhood obesity, and the number of children leaving school without the ability to cook themselves a healthy, balanced meal.  The aim of the campaign is to have a million more children eating school lunches by 2010.

In a nutshell: NHS Wirral has been working in association with a local Community Interest Group to deliver three day soccer schools, through which it aims to encourage children to enjoy themselves through physical activity and to raise awareness of obesity and nutrition. NHS Wirral staff ran nutrition workshops at the event, and offered healthchecks to parents and families. 70 children and their families are expected to attend over two weeks.

Change4Life – Down Your Street

In a nutshell:  Greater Manchester Public Health Network is hosting a series of community based street parties this summer to raise awareness of the Change4Life programme. Cookery and dance demonstrations will be provided, with the aim to help parents understand the risks that their children face if they are overweight or obese.
